HK_Hung_Hum_Container_PierThe new Hong Kong Maritime & Port Board will be chaired by Secretary for Transport & Housing Anthony Cheung and be comprised of 19 non-official, eight institutional, and three ex-officio members, the government announced.

The appointments are for two years. The director of marine and the director-general of investment promotion have been named ex-officio members.

Noting that establishing the board is a major milestone of Hong Kong’s maritime development, Cheung said the government will work closely with the industry to set the direction for the long-term development of port and maritime services.

It will also foster the development of maritime manpower and devise strategies and initiatives to enhance Hong Kong’s status as an international maritime center, he added.

The board has a wide representation from the industry, academia, and relevant statutory bodies, and Cheung said he is confident the board members’ profound expertise and diverse backgrounds will make valuable contributions to the entity’s work.

The Chief Executive announced in the 2016 Policy Address that the government will establish the board by merging the Maritime Industry Council and the Port Development Council.

The maritime & port development, manpower development, and promotion & external relations committees have been formed under the board.
