The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has asked a global consulting firm to look into the possibility of converting the Chu Lai International Airport into a regional cargo hub.
In a media release, Parsons Brinckerhoff, a consultancy assisting clients in developing and operating infrastructure projects, said it has been awarded a contract by ACV to conduct a preparatory study about redeveloping the Chu Lai International Airport, located near Da Nang, Vietnam.
The airport opened to commercial traffic in 2005 and in 2010 handled 40,000 passengers with eight to 12 flights a day.
The study, funded by a U.S. Trade and Development Agency grant, will analyze the potential for transforming the small regional airport into “a prominent regional cargo hub to serve emerging industrial areas, and become a much more significant commercial facility,” the statement read.
The study will provide data for updating the airport’s current master plan, determining how to integrate cargo into its operation, and evaluating investment opportunities for the airport’s development.
The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam aims to have the airport serve four million passengers and handle five million tons of cargo by 2025.
