The port of Da Nang in central Vietnam will receive a capital infusion of VND3 billion (US$144,000) for expansion work next year as part of a plan to convert the site into a modern container port by 2020.

Da Nang city authorities confirmed that phase two of the expansion of Tien Sa port, one of the two terminals at the port, is scheduled to start in fiscal year 2013.

The undertaking is one of the projects benefiting from the support extended by the Official Development Assistance of Japan, an office that helps developing nations with supplies, civil engineering, and other forms of assistance.

The city officials said the modernization of Tien Sa port is seen to promote not just Da Nang’s growth but also boost the East-West Economic Corridor, where Tien Sa will become a major gateway for transporting goods to countries along the east corridor.

The volume of container goods passing through Tien Sa port grows at an  annual clip of 20 percent, and is expected to reach 170,000 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) next year, according to a report published on the Vietnam Seaports Association’s Web site.

Based on the city’s development plan, Da Nang port is set to be transformed into one of the country’s leading container ports, with an annual capacity of 250,000 TEUs by 2015.
