The port in the central city of Da Nang, Vietnam, handled a record 5 million tonnes of cargo, including 167,000 TEUs (twenty-foot-equivalent units) of containers in 2013, yielding earnings of about US$23 million, according to local media reports.
The information was disclosed January 1, 2014 at a ceremony held in the Da Nang seaport to mark the receipt of the first cargo shipment of the year, brought in by the Pacific Express carrier.
In 2013, Da Nang Port handled 5.01 million tonnes of goods, some 9 percent above target and 13 percent higher than 2012 figures. The harbor is expected to process 5.3 million tonnes of cargo this year.
The port is a major port system located at the mouth of the Han River on the South China Sea. It is the country’s third largest port complex after Saigon Port in Ho Chi Minh City and and the Port of Hai Phong in Hai Phong City.
Da Nang Port lies on one end of the East-West Economic Corridor, which connects Vietnam with Laos, Thailand, and Burma.
