Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has sustained the uptick in cargo traffic from August to set a monthly record high of 374,000 tonnes in November, posting growth of 9.3 percent over the same period last year and beating the previous record set in October 2010.
Growth in November cargo throughput was primarily due to an 11 percent year-on-year growth in exports. During the month, cargo throughput to and from North America and Southeast Asia outperformed other key regions, HKIA said in a December 16 official release.
Stanley Hui Hon-chung, chief executive officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said they were pleased about the sustained rebound of cargo volume for four consecutive months despite a challenging global economic environment.
He added that they were “cautiously optimistic” the uptrend in cargo throughput at HKIA would hold.
Over the first 11 months of this year, freight volume grew by 1.7 percent to 3.7 million tonnes. On a rolling 12-month basis, cargo tonnage registered a 1.1 percent increase to 4 million.
