A new container terminal near the Port of Tanjung Priok will be constructed to ease congestion at Indonesia’s busiest port as soon as the government gives the thumbs-up to the project.
The new terminal will be built in Marunda, located about 500 meters from the Tanjung Priok port in North Jakarta, reports The Jakarta Post.
The proposed port, which will occupy 3,200 hectares, has an investment allocation of IDR1.2 trillion (US$104.7 million) and is expected to start operating next year.
The terminal is seen to alleviate overcapacity at the Tanjung Priok port, which can reportedly process only 170 containers a day against the more than 600 units that await handling daily. This has caused dwelling times at the port to balloon to 10 days this year from eight days in 2013, the mismatch causing losses of IDR4.8 billion per day for both exporters and importers.
The new port would speed up handling activities as it would have a maximum capacity of 6,000 dead weight tons.
Indonesia wants to keep up with Southeast Asian neighbors Singapore and Thailand, which have dwelling times of 1.2 days and five days, respectively.
State-owned PT Kawasan Berikat Nusantara, the operator of the industrial bonded zone in Marunda, Cakung, and Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta, will undertake construction of the project.
