Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said a congestion surcharge (CGS) will be levied on cargo from any Asian port to the port of Sydney from mid-November 2011.

The Geneva-based carrier, one of the leading shipping lines in the world, announced in a media statement that a surcharge of US$100 per 20-foot equivalent unit will be applied on the Asia-Sydney trade effective November 15.

Congestion at the Sydney port has been increasing in recent months, and the traffic slowdown has reportedly been costing ships additional fuel expenses as they raise sailing speeds to meet their schedules.
