Atlanta-based UPS announced it will increase its service rates by 4.9 percent for ground, air, and U.S.-origin international shipments effective January 2, 2012.

The rate increase for ground shipments is based on a 5.9 percent increase in the base rate, less a 1 percentage point reduction to the index-based ground fuel surcharge, the global logistics leader said in a November 18, 2011 statement.

The rate increase for air and international shipments is based on a 6.9 percent increase in the base rate, less a 2 percentage point reduction to the index-based air and international fuel surcharge.

In addition, the firm is hiking its next-day air freight and second-day air freight rates in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico by 5.9 percent. The three-day freight rates will remain unchanged, the company said.

The rate adjustments were made in view of the company’s overall cost, customer demand, and investment plans in new services and technologies, said UPS spokesman Norman Black. Another factor is fuel costs, which rose 40 percent in the third quarter year-on-year, he said.

Customers can download the 2012 Rate and Service Guide from the UPS website on January 2, 2012, when the new rates take effect, UPS said.
