The Rhenus roup announced it set up Rhenus Logistics Holding Asia Pte. Ltd early this year to pool its Asian business within a new holding company.
Rhenus Logistics will coordinate under one umbrella the activities of Rhenus Logistics Asia-Pacific based in Hong Kong and Rhenus ProLog Logistics companies based in South and Southeast Asia.
Rhenus board member Uwe Oemmelen will manage the merger of the three former Rhenus organizations in Asia from Singapore, which the company intends to become its corporate hub for the distribution of goods across Asia.
“We believe there is enormous potential for growth both in Eurasian freight traffic and on the inner Asian market as a result of economic advancement and the rise in population. The relocation of my workplace to Singapore enables us to provide support at management board level for integrating the organisations to bring them in line with the Contract Logistics, Port Logistics and Freight Logistics business areas,” said Oemmelen in a company statement on February 14.
In addition to the merger, the German logistics company said it is eyeing new acquisitions “to consolidate the network in South Asia, the ASEAN countries and China in the long term.”
Rhenus now has business centers in the following Asian countries: China, India, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and the Philippines.
Rhenus took a majority holding in the Rhenus ProLog Group in the autumn of 2010, increasing its turnover in South and Southeast Asia by about US$50 million as a result. Rhenus Logistics has been operating in the Asia-Pacific region through Rhenus Logistics Asia-Pacific since 2002.
The Rhenus group provides logistics services around the globe and has an annual turnover of EUR3 billion. Rhenus employs more than 18,000 people at more than 290 locations worldwide.
