A.P. Moller-Maersk, the Danish shipping and energy conglomerate, said CEO Nils Smedegaard Andersen has extended his sick leave for six to eight weeks more, with the executive board managing the firm in his absence.
“The management team has passed the test and shown it is robust and will also be able to handle the extension of Nils Andersen’s sick leave without any loss of momentum,” Michael Pram Rasmussen, chairman of the board, said in a statement.
Andersen has gone on a longer sick leave as he prepares to go under the knife again to repair a heart problem.
Andersen was admitted to a hospital in Switzerland on December 30 last year for an emergency heart surgery to replace a leaking cardiac valve. He was supposed to resume his duties last March 26.
The 53-year-old Andersen, who has been group CEO since 2007, is slated to undergo surgery on March 28 and will convalesce for about six to eight weeks upon his doctors’ advice, the company said.
