The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Board of Directors has finally approved proposed port development plans for Terminal I Phase I of North Harbor submitted by operator Manila North Harbour Port, Inc (MNHPI).

For completion next year, the plans include advance work such as construction of a single integrated passenger terminal building (PTB) complex with a seating capacity of 1,900 expandable to 3,800 instead of two small PTBs; reconstruction work and extension of Pier 4 to consolidate roll on-roll off (ro-ro) and passenger operations and provide sufficient deep water berths; and reconstruction work and extension of Pier 10-southside to provide sufficient deep water berth for lift on-lift off vessels (lo-lo).

The berth for ro-ro vessels will be deepened to 10.5-11 meters from the current six meters, and the berth for lo-lo vessels to 10.5-11 meters from the current eight meters.

“MNHPI will also increase productivity with the introduction of adequate and appropriate equipment such as quay cranes,” PPA said.

PPA and MNHPI are now clearing the port periphery of informal settlers and relocating them.

MNHPI —a joint venture between Harbour Centre Port Terminals, Inc and San Miguel Corp — is allotting this year P2 billion for North Harbor capital expenditures and expects container volume at the port to increase 7-8%.
