Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT), the second cargo terminal handler at the Hong Kong International Airport, announced that its tonnage throughput in February fell 13 percent to 45,064 tonnes compared to the same period last year.
Export cargo last month registered 28,677 tonnes, down 14 percent year-over-year, while import cargo was 15,257 tonnes, a slide of 15 percent. Transshipment volume, however, surged 133 percent to 1,131 tonnes.
For the first two months of 2013, total export tonnage was 69,906 tonnes, up 5 percent against the same period last year, and transshipment cargo jumped 102 percent to 2,037 tonnes. But combined import tonnage registered 33,603 tonnes, representing a 4 percent year-over-year decline.
Chan Yee Lin, general manager of AAT, said the slowdown in air cargo traffic in February was expected as a result of the break in production to mark the Chinese New Year. “However, with the modest growth in tonnage year-to-date, we hope that the growth will gather momentum for the remaining part of the year,” he added.
