Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon recently signed Customs Special Order No. 58-2016 authorizing deputy chief of staff Mandy Therese Anderson to sign the daily time record of professional players and coaches under the newly formed Bureau of Customs (BOC) basketball and volleyball teams now playing in two different sports leagues.
There are unconfirmed reports that the more popular players get paid at least P50,000 per month for their services plus another P50,000 “donated” by some stakeholders.
Asked if the players are under contract or have a job order with BOC, the agency’s Public Information and Assistance Division in a text message to PortCalls said they have yet to check.
Basketball players Kenneth Duremdes, Marlou Aquino, Dave Arguelles, and Dante Canaway are playing for the BOC Transformers basketball team now competing in the 5th UNTV Cup.
Faeldon earlier said enlisting the teams in these sports cups overcomes the general perception that the BOC is one of the most corrupt in government.
The UNTV Cup is a charity basketball league organized by Breakthrough and Milestones Productions International Inc. and features athletic public servants from agencies of the three branches of government.
Every season, the final four teams to qualify for the championship round will automatically receive cash prizes to be given to their chosen charities. Other participating teams will also get consolation prizes in behalf of their selected beneficiaries.
BOC’s chosen beneficiary is Caritas Manila, Inc. There are 12 other government agencies playing in the cup, including the Bureau of Fire Protection, Ombudsman, Senate, Department of Justice, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, and Malacañang.
Meanwhile, the bureau’s new volleyball team, also named BOC Transformers, has been joined by multi-awarded volleyball player Alyssa Valdez and volleyball coaches Parley Tupaz and Sherwin Meneses. Also on the team are former university volleyball players Fenela Emnas, Jonalyn Ibisa, and Andrea Marzan, among others.
Two imports from Thailand, Natthanicha Jaisaen and Kanjana Kuthaisong, have also been hired to join the team.
The BOC Transformers volleyball team is currently competing in the Shakey’s V-League 13th Season Reinforced Conference against other universities and government agencies.
The teams conduct their trainings at the BOC hard court in Gate 3, Port Area.
