Cargolux has launched its first weekly Boeing 747-8 freighter service to the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, after the airport was cleared for operations of the new, advanced freighter.

Cargolux, Europe’s largest all-cargo airline, operated the inaugural Boeing 747-8 flight on July 27 from Luxembourg and touched down at the Vietnam airport on July 28.

This comes after Cargolux has been operating its first Boeing 747-8 freighter revenue flight to Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport since March. The Hanoi airport is the 100th 747-8- certified airport worldwide.

Cargolux has also increased its air cargo services to Hanoi to three weekly rotations.

Ho Chi Minh City is the largest commercial city in Vietnam with a fast-growing fashion manufacturing industry. Following Ho Chi Minh City’s certification, the Luxembourg-based company said all its destinations in the Asia-Pacific area are now cleared for the airline’s larger, more efficient freighter type.

“A lot of production is moving to Vietnam and the country shows great determination in boosting its trade by approving its airports for 747-8 operations,” said Richard Forson, Cargolux interim president and CEO.
