Chilean shipping company CSAV announced a restructuring of services from December 2011 in view of the weaker demand during the winter season.

It said the two shipping firms Hamburg Süd and Maersk Line have agreed with the group of CMA-CGM, CSAV and CSCL to combine their services from Asia to South Africa and the East Coast of South America from December.

Each group currently operates two weekly services in the trade. The ASAS/NGX Sling 1 service and ASAX/SEAS Sling 1 service will remain unchanged and independent, CSAV said.

However, from December 2011 through May 2012, the ASAS/NGX Sling 2 and ASAX/SEAS Sling 2 services will be merged.

Thus, the new structure will be as follows:

ASAS/NGX 1: The service will have 11 vessels of capacities of 7,100 to 7,450 TEUs operated jointly by Hamburg Süd and Maersk Line.

ASAX/SEAS 1: The service will have 11 ships each with 6,500-TEU capacity operated by CMA-CGM, CSAV, and CSCL.

New Joint Service: To involve all five carriers, it will have 11 ships of capacities of 4,200 to 4,600 TEUs serving the trade. Its port rotation is Shanghai, Ningbo, Nansha, Hong Kong, Chiwan, Tanjung Pelepas, Singapore, Durban, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Paranagua, Itajai, Santos, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai.

The new joint service will have MV Cap Jackson as the starting vessel, which departs Shanghai on December 16.
