Cargo traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continued its growth streak, posting a stronger performance in September year-on-year, after recording volume expansion in August.

Airfreight throughput at HKIA rose 6.8 percent to 347,000 tonnes last month, largely attributable to a more intense export activity.

Exports for the month logged a 7 percent year-on-year growth, said the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), operator and developer of HKIA.

In August, HKIA booked a 3 percent growth in cargo over the same month a year ago, also on an export surge.

The strong rebound in throughput in September is also consistent with the strong rebound in trade for the period, AAHK said. During the month, cargo traffic to and from North America and Southeast Asia outperformed other key regions.

“It is particularly pleasing to see year-on-year increases in cargo throughput over the last two consecutive months,” said Stanley Hui Hon-chung, chief executive officer of AAHK. “We remain optimistic about cargo demand and we are confident that HKIA’s long-term performance remains promising.”

In the first three quarters of 2012, the airport recorded 2.9 million tonnes of cargo carried, representing a year-on-year increase of 0.9 percent.

On a rolling 12-month basis, cargo volume declined 1.1 percent to 4 million tonnes.
