The New Priok Port project in north Jakarta, Indonesia, can begin now that state-owned port operator Indonesia Port Corporation (IPC) has received the official Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) permission from the Ministry of Environment.
IPC said on January 3 that it will soon implement groundbreaking ceremonies to kick-start the New Priok infrastructure development after the issuance of the Minister of Environment Decree number 293 of 2012.
The environmental permit gives IPC the go-signal to construct and operate the New Priok terminal in Kalibaru, north Jakarta.
IPC, also known as PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II, said phase one of the New Priok development will be built on 195 hectares of land and will include three container terminals.
The first phase is targeted to start operating in 2014. The port will have a quay length of 4,000 meters and a capacity of up to 4.5 million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs).
The entire project is slated to be completed in 2023. It will become the largest port in Indonesia, with a total capacity of 13 million TEUs.
The port is seen to boost the country’s shipping and logistics efficiency and attract more investors to Indonesia, IPC said. It will have a 300-meter two-way lane to accommodate large ships of EEE class to do away with transshipping in other countries, reducing shippers’ transportation and logistics costs.
