MANILA’S three major ports handled the bulk or 3.7 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized traffic passing through the capital’s ports.

The figure represents 71% of the total 5.2 million TEUs handled in Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) ports last year, according to PPA Port District Manager for Southern Luzon Hector Miole.

North Harbor processed 865,728 TEUs last year, South Harbor posted a throughput of 1.014 million TEUs while Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) registered 1.826 million TEUs.

Asian Terminals, Inc’s (ATI) Batangas port handled 137,109 TEUs in 2012.

The Port of Subic registered 36,304 TEUs last year, up 47% from 27,671 TEUs in 2011, data gathered by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority show.

Container volume in Cebu rose 4.2% to 157,272 TEUs last year from 2011’s 150,924 TEUs while Davao posted 195,369 TEUs in 2012, dropping 24.7% from 2011’s level of 208,852 TEUs.

Manila and Cebu are import markets while Mindanao is the only net exporter in the mix, with Davao as the primary source of banana exports.

Cebu imports registered an 11.38% jump to 112,010 TEUs, as exports declined 10.13% to 45,262 TEUs from 50,365 TEUs.

In Davao, both imports and exports posted double-digit declines last year. The volume of exports dropped 24.2% to 128,627 TEUs while imports went down 25.87% to 66,742 TEUs.

Containerized cargo handled nationwide increased 5.44% to 5.2 million TEUs in 2012 compared with 4.931 million TEUs in 2011.

Total cargo throughput went up 6.91% or 12.33 million metric tons (mmt) to 190.606 mmt. Foreign and domestic cargo increased 10.08 mmt or 9.68% and 2.25 mmt or 3.03%, respectively.
