PALThe Philippines’ two main aviation gateways posted sound cargo volume results for the first two months of the year, data from the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIA) showed.

Air cargo volume at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the country’s main gateway, improved 5.04% in January-February to 71.611 million kilograms versus the 68.172 million kg for the same period in 2013.

Of the total, international cargoes accounted for 49.179 million kg, 11.2% more than the 44.225 million kg in 2013.

Domestic cargoes carried in January-February this year fell 6.33% to 22.432 million kg from 23.947 million kg in the same period last year.

The country’s Visayan gateway, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, also recorded growth in cargo volume for the first two months with 10.21 million kg. This is 14.69% higher than the 8.903 million kg in January-February 2013.

MCIA domestic cargoes, which contributed 7.736 million kg of the total, rose 18.03% from 6.555 million kg in the same period earlier.

International cargoes handled increased 5.36% to 2.474 million kg from 2.348 million kg.

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) awarded the rehabilitation of 32-year-old NAIA Terminal to listed construction giant D.M. Consunji, Inc. last December with a deadline to complete the project on Dec. 1 this year.

On another note, DOTC recently awarded the concession for the expansion of the MCIA to the GMR-Megawide Consortium.
