NYK Line is expanding its services to better accommodate container traffic growth in the ASEAN region, including the Philippines.

Starting next month, the Pegasus service currently calling Osaka – Shimizu – Tokyo – Yokohama – Nagoya – Kobe – Manila – Singapore – Port Klang – Jakarta – Singapore – Manila – Osaka will be refined.

“Port rotations in the new PGS-1 (Pegasus-1) and PGS-2 (Pegasus-2) services have been refined to improve the transit time to Manila from Japan’s Kanto region and keep the transit time competitive from Japan’s Kansai region,” Daniel Ventanilla, general manager of NYK Fil-Japan Shipping Corp, said at a recent shipping conference, adding links to the ASEAN market have also been intensified.

The two services will deploy eight feeder vessels with an average capacity of 2,600-TEUs.

The 28-day PGS-1 service will start April 5 and call Tokyo – Kawasaki – Yokohama – Shimizu – Yokkaichi – Nagoya – Kobe – Manila– Singapore – Port Klang – Jakarta – Singapore – Hong Kong – Tokyo.

PGS-2’s port rotation will be Osaka – Nagoya – Shimizu – Tokyo – Yokohama – Omaezaki – Singapore – Jakarta – Singapore – Manila– Osaka. The service starts April 20.

“This is NYK Line’s commitment in responding to the growing Philippine economy which has experienced strong growth in 2012 ending with a 6.6% GDP growth and with a 2013 forecast of 5.9%,” he said.

The two new loops through Manila will be further complemented by NYK Line’s launch of new services linking Japan-Vietnam on the New LNS and VLS services and Japan-Thailand-India through the New HLS services.

NYK Line will launch a total of five loops aimed at upgrading its Asia service network.

Opportunities in Asia abound in terms of container volume movements as the region becomes more involved in the growth of emerging markets, said Ventanilla.

China will remain Asia’s growth engine with ASEAN countries, including the Philippines, fueling such growth largely due to the strength of domestic consumption and the recent resurgence of manufacturing particularly in the area of food and other light industries.

In answer to increased traffic and efficiencies realized for completely built car units, NYK Line has introduced bigger and more efficient car carriers/roll on-roll off vessels that call weekly at Batangas port.
