The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Malaysia has named Glen Hilton its new chief executive officer effective March 1, 2013. Hilton, an Australian, will spearhead the RM1.4 billion (US$447 million) expansion of Malaysia’s largest box terminal that is expected to increase its annual capacity by 25 percent to 10.5 million TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units).

The development project calls for the building of two berths, raising the total number of berths to 14. The new berths are currently under construction and scheduled to be finished by May 2014.

The expansion, which will complete the second phase of PTP’s master plan, also involves the erection of three blocks of containers yards, the purchase of new cranes, as well as the electrification of existing rubber-tired gantries.

The new berths and new equipment will allow PTP to serve Maersk Line’s mega ships, the Triple-E vessels with 18,000-TEU capacity.

Hilton has 12 years of experience working at various ports in the DP World Group. Before his PTP post, he was the managing director and vice president for SE Asia of DP World.

PTP processed 7.7 million TEUs in 2012 and aims to increase its volume by about 6 percent this year.

The third phase of the expansion project is currently under study and will include the construction of three berths set for completion by 2018.
