The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor saw throughput grow 15 percent in 2011 over the previous year.

The port, Malaysia’s biggest, handled 7.5 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers last year to outperform global volume growth of 7 percent.

PTP said its good record was buoyed by organic growth from existing customers and additional volumes from new customers.

Main existing clients Maersk Line and Evergreen Line increased their container volume 16 percent in 2011, with new customers for the year including Hanjin Shipping, STX Pan Ocean, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, “K” Line and China Shipping contributing to the volume expansion.

The port’s focus is to continue improving the quality of its services, said Azlan Shahrim, PTP deputy chief executive officer.

“From just two shipping lines in our early days, we now have 26 shipping lines and box operators. This has vastly improved connectivity and frequency, and enabled us to provide shippers better access to the global market,” he said.

PTP is also one of seven ports worldwide chosen by Maersk Line for its new Daily Maersk service, a daily service between the Far East and North Europe involving 70 vessels operating between four mega ports in Asia and three ports in Europe.

PTP is a joint venture between MMC Corp Bhd and APM Terminals, a Netherlands-based utilities and infrastructure company.
