The rehabilitation of Marinduque Airport’s passenger terminal building (PTB) and extended runway paved the way for the reopening of the facility, nearly six years after commercial flight operations were halted.
Located in Barangay Masiga in the municipality of Gasan, the airport hosted its last regular commercial flight before rehabilitation in May 2013.
For the airport’s PTB, improvements included replacing accordion walls with glass walls, and installing air-conditioning units, CCTV cameras and X-ray machines, all intended to make the facility more convenient, safe, and secure.
Additionally, concreting of the runway was completed on November 9, 2018. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines extended the infrastructure’s usable length from the previous 1,400 meters of asphalt runway to the current 1,534 meters of concrete runway. The improvement will allow the airport to accommodate turbo prop aircraft such as ATR and Q400.
The airport will undergo further improvements until 2020, including the provision of a canal, a power house, and communal toilets, and the construction of a covered pathway and waiting areas.
With the modernized PTB and extended runway, Cebu Pacific officially launched its inaugural flight on April 1, 2019, servicing Manila to Marinduque and vice versa. Flights will operate thrice a week during Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
