Indonesia Port Corporation (IPC), formerly Pelindo II, will build a 400-meter dock at the planned Kalibaru Port for the loading and unloading of vehicles to reduce congestion at the Tanjung Priok Port’s car terminal.

Bimo Widihatmoko, unit chief of the Tanjung Priok Car Terminal (TPCT), said the new dock will alleviate congestion at the TPCT, which is nearing its docking capacity of 250,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year, Indonesian media reported. Traffic at the car terminal from January to March 2012 had already topped 147,000 TEUs.

If the car terminal at Kalibaru is ready, the TPCT facility will be used as bulk terminal or domestic car terminal, Widihatmoko said.

The Indonesian government earlier this year gave the go-ahead to state-owned port operator IPC to construct the Kalibaru Port, or New Priok Port, in north Jakarta to serve as a support shipping gateway to ease the worsening traffic at Tanjung Priok, Indonesia’s premier port, as well as bolster the shipping industry and the country’s economy as well.

Richard Joost Lino, IPC president director, said in April that the Kalibaru Port would have a total capacity of 13 million TEUs and be built in three phases.

The first phase, estimated to cost $2.47 billion, will involve the development of three container terminals with a total capacity of 4.5 million TEUs, and two fuel berths. It is expected to be completed in 2014.
