Vietnam opened January 28 the Cai Mep-Thi Vai International Ports, the country’s deepest and biggest port system located in the southern province of Ba Ria Vung Tau.

The US$624.4-million project is expected to accommodate increasing shipping activities in the south, and cut transit time and costs by providing direct shipping links to domestic and international ports. It is also seen to ease pressure on the ports in Ho Chi Minh City.

The deep-sea port complex in the Tan Thanh district of Ba Ria Vung Tau includes the Cai Mep container port, which will be able to receive 100,000 DWT vessels, and the Thi Vai general port, which can receive 50,000 DWT vessels.

Construction of the port was co-funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Vietnamese government.
