A.P. Moller-Maersk announced that CEO Nils S. Andersen has gone on a one-month sick leave following an emergency heart surgery to replace a leaking cardiac valve.

Andersen, 53, was admitted to hospital in Switzerland on December 30, 2011.

“Nils S. Andersen has, unwittingly, had a leak in one of his heart valves, caused by either an infection or a weakness. During a vacation in Switzerland his condition deteriorated acutely, and therefore he has undergone surgery which comprised replacement of a cardiac valve,” the Danish shipping and logistics conglomerate said in a statement on January 1, 2012.

The operation went well and Andersen is expected to be absent for about one month. The doctors are expecting a full recovery, the statement added.

“I am very sorry that Nils S. Andersen is going through this course of illness, but I am pleased that he quickly received the right, skilled treatment which coupled with the fact that he is in good shape means that we can soon welcome him back,” said Michael Pram Rasmussen, chairman of the board of A.P. Moller-Maersk.

“The Executive Board will continue to run the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. However, during Nils S. Andersen’s absence the individual board members will be in close contact with me,” said Rasmussen.
