An access road leading to Masbate’s seaport has been improved by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), providing the riding public a more convenient trip and stimulating economic activity in the area.
DPWH paved 3.6 kilometers of road at Junction Morning-Cataingan-Esperanza Port in the town of Pio V. Corpuz, Masbate, to enable tourists and local residents to easily access the provinces of Samar, Leyte, and Cebu through Esperanza’s roll-on/roll-off port.
The agency allocated P91.5 million for the road enhancement project that covered road widening and thickening works and installation of a 1.5-meter shoulder on both sides, with drainage structures, metal beam guardrail, and pavement markings.
According to DPWH Region 5 Director Reynaldo Tagudando, the newly improved road will facilitate movement of agricultural and marine products, thereby improving the economy of the province and the earnings of local residents, whose primary sources of income are farming and fishing.
It is also seen to enhance the socioeconomic activities and tourism industry of Masbate, a province blessed with picturesque beaches, sandbars, falls, natural parks, and marine sanctuaries.
Road projects that improve connectivity to tourism sites remain a top priority of DPWH for Region 5.
Other major projects in the region that are set for completion this year are the improvement of Mayon-Mariawa-Puro Road in Albay, a P116.2 million road project leading to the proposed Bicol International Airport, and the Bacon-Manito Road project in Sorsogon, which has a development cost of P168.2 million.
