The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) have new bosses.

Starting next week, the CAAP will be headed by former MIAA general manager Alfonso Cusi who replaces Ruben Ciron.

Taking Cusi’s place at the MIAA is Atty Melvin Matibag, who was previously MIAA head executive assistant.

Prior to his appointment as CAAP director general, Cusi contemplated on seeking a congressional seat in Mindoro in the May elections.

Matibag, on the other hand, bested MIAA assistant general managers Robert Uy and Angel Atutubo for the top airport position.

Meanwhile, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has appointed Angelo Verdan as administrator of the Marina, replacing Ma. Elena Bautista who is now chief of the Presidential Management Staff.

Prior to joining Marina, Verdan was general manager of the Cebu Ports Authority (CPA). His deputy Dennis Villamor will succeed him at the CPA.

Verdan, who was formally introduced to the media yesterday, said he will still enforce safety procedures crafted by his predecessor but will subject these to further study and consultation to prevent quarrels between the authority and vessel operators.

His predecessor’s transfer came after shipping companies protested against her policies on maritime safety that almost triggered a transport holiday at the start of this month.
